Dimensions:
Sheet 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: nearly the full sheet
Condition: good condition, unframed
Provenance: Livre d’Or de Yves Guérin, compiled 1963–1992 (single-owner provenance). Very probably by Andrée Levillain, painter and wife of François Bret (no. 1 in this guest book), making the couple a matched pair within the album — as with Roger Forissier (no. 9) and Nathalie Chabrier (no. 3).
Description: A still-life interior — flowers in a vase on a table, an upholstered chair at the right and, behind, a window opening onto a harbour with boats — drawn in coloured pencil with a free, lyrical touch of layered vertical hatching in blues, greens, yellows and pinks. If by Andrée Levillain, she trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (in the studios of Devambez, Charles Guérin and Untersteller), where she met François Bret, whom she married in 1939. The sensitive, assured handling is that of a Beaux-Arts-trained painter.
