By GOERG Edouard (1893-1969)

Édouard Goerg (1893–1969)
Lot of two original etchings

Two original etchings (and drypoint) on wove paper, both unsigned

Inscriptions: (a) no edition or state mark, pencil inventory no. “1424” lower-right corner — (b) first state, numbered “1er ét. 3/4” in pencil lower right, pencil inventory no. “1458” lower-right corner
Dimensions — both on matching 50 × 32.5 cm sheets:

(a) Sheet 50 × 32.5 cm (19 11/16 × 12 13/16 in.); Image (plate mark) 28 × 18.8 cm (11 × 7 3/8 in.)

(b) Sheet 32.5 × 50 cm (12 13/16 × 19 11/16 in.); Image (plate mark) 22.5 × 28.5 cm (8 7/8 × 11 1/4 in.)

Condition: (a) very fine, richly inked; (b) very fine impression, well inked, with a small stain in the upper-left margin; both unframed

Two sheets in the artist’s dense, nervous expressionist line. In (a), a seated female nude faces us against the arched back of an armchair while a clothed man looms in the shadows behind — Goerg’s recurrent confrontation of the candid nude and the watching male, its velvety blacks setting off the luminous body. In (b), youthful nude figures — nymphs — flee and tumble through a wooded clearing as deer graze among the slender trunks beyond, a fantastic, poetic forest that recalls the artist’s avowed kinship with Bosch and Goya; here a rare first-state proof (3/4) pulled before the definitive edition. Goerg was a major French Expressionist and one of the foremost etchers of his generation, teaching etching at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and presiding over the Société des Peintres-Graveurs français
