Plate 198 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. Moreau-Nélaton — painter, ceramicist and one of the great art historians and collectors of his time, whose collection now forms a cornerstone of the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay — designed this moving appeal calling on the workers of France to “each bring their stone” to the building of Notre-Dame du Travail, the workers’ church of the Plaisance district in Paris, a rare example of Belle Époque poster art serving a social and spiritual cause.
