Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. This plate was issued with an extract from Paul Verlaine. Christiansen, one of the leading designers of the German Jugendstil and a member of the Darmstadt artists’ colony from 1899, made this his only contribution to the series.
