Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication. This Salomé is one of the rare “planches de prime” offered only to yearly subscribers, and is therefore scarcer than the regular plates. Merson, Prix de Rome in 1869 and designer of the Banque de France banknotes, treats the theme in the Quattrocento-inspired manner typical of his Symbolist academicism.
