Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. A circus subject in the wake of Toulouse-Lautrec — bareback rider, clowns and stool in the ring, flat colour planes and bold outline. Ranft, Swiss-born and active in Paris, was one of the most prolific colour printmakers of the 1890s.
