Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. Latenay, a painter of Symbolist gardens, is best remembered for his illustrations of Homer’s Nausicaa (Piazza, 1899); this plate, with its young women sailing toy boats in a basin among orange trees, belongs to the same decorative vein.
