Meanders is Tobey’s last work: nine original screenprints “in the old Chinese manner”, designed and approved by the artist with Edition Lanz in Basel. Tobey died on 24 April 1976, before the edition could be signed; the portfolio was issued posthumously the same year, each impression bearing the artist’s seal in place of his signature and signed on the verso by Mark Ritter on behalf of the estate. The portfolio’s justification page states this explicitly and describes the accompanying texts: four pages of statements by Tobey, an original poem by the artist and two pages by Ritter on the genesis of the work. An original print validated by the artist, not a reproduction.
