Poster for Sarah Bernhardt’s 1896 revival of Dumas fils’ play at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, the first commission of the six-year contract between the actress and Mucha. Marguerite Gautier stands in profile against a ground of silver stars, a white camellia in her hair, while a hand at the foot of the design holds up another camellia, the flower of the heroine’s death. Bernhardt kept this design for her 1905–1906 and 1910–1911 United States tours.
