Next to the journal ‘Ver Sacrum’ (‘Sacred Spring’), ‘Die Fläche’ is one of the most beautiful collections of designs by the artists of the ‘Wiener Werkstätte’, and the Viennese artist active during the turn of the century, such as Max Benirschke, Johanna Hollmann, Moritz Jung, Gustav Klimt, Minka Podhajska, Rosa Wachsmann, Franz von Zülow and many others.

‘Die Fläche’ (literally, ‘The surface’), produced in portfolio form, was formulated as a ‘Musterbuch,’ or pattern book, of graphic insignia and poster designs, including posters, book designs (including dust jackets and endpapers), advertisements, wallpapers, textiles and many more.

– ‘Die Fläche,’ like ‘Ver Sacrum,’ was conceived as an art object” (Kallir).
