Illustration from “Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. Pugnae Bestiarorum” (“With wild beasts, birds, fish”), the famous series of hunting engravings by Jean Stradanus, printed in Antwerp in 1585.
The first edition printed in Antwerp around 1585, prior to the printing of the address title “Antverpiae, apud Joannem Gallacum” published by Galle, comprised 43 unnumbered plates all engraved by Galle with a dedication page to Cosimo de Medici. After this edition the series was expanded to 104 plates engraved by A. Collaert, J. Collaert, C. Galle I and C. de Mallery.
Condition : In fair condition with some folds, stains, tears in the border margins. The paper, trimmed, is slightly yellowed. Well-inked otherwise, with great detailed lines. Not framed.
The Rijksmuseum offers the following description of this print from the earlier edition published by Philips Galle:
“Indians catch ducks in a pond. Indians camouflage themselves and hide in the water through a hollowed-out pumpkin. Wild ducks sit on the pumpkins and are easy prey. The print has a Latin caption and is part of a series about hunting scenes.”
Published by Phil’s. Galle, Antwerp.
