The two sheets are the front- and back-cover heads of the wrap-around cover Picasso created for the fourth and final volume of Fernand Mourlot’s catalogue raisonné of his lithographs (covering the prints of 1956–1963), published by André Sauret, Éditions du Livre, Monte-Carlo, 1964. Drawn in a single sitting on 4 February 1963, both heads exemplify Picasso’s late graphic shorthand for the human face: a dense, almost frenzied web of lithographic crayon out of which a few reserved white passages — diamond eyes, a Y-shaped nose, a crescent smile — resolve into a grinning mask. Printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris.
