Signed, dated, and titled on the plate lower margin: “89 Paul Gauguin, Les drames de la mer Bretagne”.

Dimensions:
+ Size of the sheet: 32,5 x 46,5 cm / 12,7 x 18,3 in.
+ Size of the image: 17 x 22,5 cm / 6,6 x 8,8 in.

Condition: In overall good condition, with some soft handling creases, some visible flows, and some small notable folds in the margins. One small tear in the upper right margin. Some remains of pieces of white tape on the back, NOT visible from the front. Image very clean otherwise; well-inked.

Issued from “Suite Volpini”, a set of eleven zincographs made by Paul Gauguin in 1889, where the artist displayed several places that he traveled to in Martinique, in South of France, or else in Brittany. The series was first exhibited at the Café des Arts (or “Café Volpini”), outside the 1889 World Fair, Paris. Please note that we only sell this plate, NOT the complete suite.

The second edition of “Suite Volpini” was published by Ambroise Vollard after 1900, using the original engraving zinc plate from 1889.

The first 1889 edition was referenced in Guérin, Mongan, Kornfeld #7; Joachim #4 Ab.
