Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. A very early work: Jouve was nineteen when this plate appeared, three years before the animal frieze of the Porte Monumentale at the 1900 Exposition Universelle made his name. Chimpanzees observed at the Jardin des Plantes under an ironic mythological title — already the future master of animal art.
