Condition: good condition, unframed

Provenance: Livre d’Or de Yves Guérin, compiled 1963–1992 (single-owner provenance). Mendoze belonged to the Mediterranean art circle around the collector, having won the Prix de la Jeune Peinture Méditerranéenne in Nice (1958) and the Menton Rotary prize (1955).

Description: A lively Bastille-Day view of the Boulevard de Strasbourg in Toulon — tall buildings, plane trees, market stalls and awnings, a street lamp, crowds and cars — drawn in loose, impressionistic graphite. Robert Mendoze was a Toulon-born figurative painter, pupil of Eugène Baboulène, co-founder of the Groupe 50 and a leading figure of the École toulonnaise; he exhibited internationally and is especially collected in the United States. Drawn, dated and dedicated by hand to the collector in his home city.
