Condition: good condition, unframed

Provenance: Livre d’Or de Yves Guérin, compiled 1963–1992 (single-owner provenance). One of the latest sheets in the album, from the collector’s early-1990s Poissy circle: it commemorates the artist’s first exhibition at the Espace Blanche de Castille in Poissy (Yvelines), on 25 May 1991.

Description: A woodland riverbank — tall slender trunks rising against autumnal foliage in purples, ochres and greens — mirrored in the calm water below, the reflection treated as a shimmering, near-abstract weave of colour, with fluid washes animated by an energetic black crayon line. Marcel Soyez, born in Douai in 1931 and trained at the Académie Charpentier and the École des Métiers d’Art in Paris, is a French figurative painter of the “réalité subjective” group and a longtime professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués (Chevalier des Palmes Académiques); woods, rocks and still waters, alongside the nude, are his signature subjects — making this sheet entirely characteristic.
