By BONÀS Jordi

Jordi Bonas (1937–2017)

Portrait de Moretti (Portrait of Moretti), c. 1980

Original lithograph in black on vélin d’Arches with deckle edges

Numbered 66/75 in pencil lower left, titled in pencil lower centre, signed in pencil lower right

Dimensions: Sheet 72 × 54 cm (28.3 × 21.3 in.)

Condition: Good. Strong, contrasted impression, fresh bright sheet with full deckle edges. A few small scattered foxing spots in the margins (upper left corner and lower left edge); image area unaffected. Light undulation of the sheet. Unframed.

Private collection, France

The frontal head of a bearded man rises out of a whirlwind of looping, continuous line, hair and beard dissolving into pure gesture while the two eyes hold the centre of the sheet with startling fixity; at right a block of dense crayon hatching anchors the composition and throws the head forward. The sitter is the painter Moretti, in all likelihood Lucien-Philippe Moretti (1922–2000), the Montmartre painter who, like Bonas, belonged to the same Montmartre milieu of painters, on the rue du Mont-Cenis. Born in Barcelona in 1937, Bonas trained at the city’s Beaux-Arts and worked alongside Pedro Pruna from 1954 to 1959 before settling in Montmartre; he showed at the Salon des Indépendants, restored paintings for the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the murals of Saint-Jean de Montmartre in 1964, held a contract with the Adamo Gallery in New York from 1964 to 1967, and later withdrew to the Loire valley, where he received the Prix international du Gemmail at Tours in 1992.
