Condition: Good. Rich, velvety impression with the plate mark clean and crisp. Light scattered foxing in the margins; image area unaffected. Unframed.

A single clementine with its leaf rests on the edge of a dark cloth, set against a deep blue-green ground that dissolves into grey towards the base. The plate is bordered by a scalloped ochre band that echoes the scalloped hem of the cloth below, painted with wavy white lines and rows of dots. The subject is characteristic of Rigal’s mature still lifes, in which a single humble object is isolated in a vast, atmospheric space obtained through the deep tonal range of aquatint — the technique of which he was among the acknowledged masters in the second half of the twentieth century. Son of the engraver Edmond Rigal, he divided his life between Paris and Fontenay-aux-Roses.
