Condition: Very good. Fresh, clean impression on a bright cream sheet. Deckled edges preserved. Minor handling marks at extreme edges, no tears, no foxing observed. Unframed.

A crowded interior in eighteenth-century costume, treated in the loose, nervous crayon manner characteristic of Moretti’s graphic work. A young woman sits upright in bed at the centre, hand to her cheek, while three men in wigs and frock coats occupy the foreground and right — one seated at left in profile, one bent forward, one reclining under a canopy. The room is furnished with a mantelpiece, framed pictures, a hanging lamp and a curtained bed, all summarily indicated with rapid parallel hatching that leaves large areas of the sheet in reserve. The scene belongs to the anecdotal, lightly comic vein of period genre subjects that Moretti developed alongside his book illustration. As the first artist’s proof, this impression stands outside the numbered printing.
