Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. Rhead, English-born and active in New York, was one of the leading poster artists of the 1890s; this plate in blue, red and turquoise, with its peacocks and peacock-feather gown, is his most reproduced image and one of the icons of the series.
