Plate from L’Estampe Moderne, the celebrated subscription series published monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 by Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, each issue offering four original lithographs commissioned especially for the publication, complete with a captioned tissue guard. Meunier, the Brussels poster artist and nephew of the sculptor Constantin Meunier, produced here one of the emblematic images of Belgian Art Nouveau — a profile against the setting sun, in four flat colours and a single sinuous line.
