Plate 196 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. Meunier, the Brussels poster artist and nephew of the sculptor Constantin Meunier, designed this poster for Starlight soap, printed by O. De Rycker in Brussels: a naked child crouching in a basin, a butterfly on the water, in flat colours and a single sinuous outline — one of the icons of Belgian Art Nouveau.
