Plate 36 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. Dow, the American painter and printmaker whose teaching of Japanese-inspired composition shaped Georgia O’Keeffe and a whole generation of American artists, designed this poster for the Boston art magazine Modern Art, published by L. Prang & Co.: an Ipswich marsh landscape treated like a Japanese woodcut, one of the very few American posters admitted into the series.
