Plate 168 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. Under the pseudonym Beggarstaffs, the brothers-in-law Pryde and Nicholson revolutionised the British poster between 1894 and 1899 with cut-paper silhouettes and radical economy of means; this design for Rowntree’s cocoa, with its Regency gentleman and his shadowy companions, is one of their most celebrated.
