Plate 72 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. Mataloni’s poster for the Auer incandescent gas mantle, printed in Rome, is regarded as the first Italian Art Nouveau poster: a kneeling woman holding up the new gas light in a burst of rays, framed by sunflowers, gas pipes and a street lantern.
