Plate 41 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. A landmark in the history of cinema: Chéret’s poster announced Émile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique at the Musée Grévin, the first public projections of animated moving pictures, in October 1892 — three years before the Lumière brothers. A Chérette in a yellow dress dances with Pierrot and Harlequin, the characters of Reynaud’s Pauvre Pierrot.
