This is the black variation of the original exhibition poster (three variations were created: red, blue, and black) for Andy Warhol’s The American Indian Series, commissioned by Ace Gallery in Los Angeles in 1976–1977.

The portrait depicts Russell Means, Native American rights activist and member of the American Indian Movement. Warhol’s 18 portraits of Russell Means have become emblematic of the crises of contemporary America and the significance of its minorities.
