Provenance: Livre d’Or de Yves Guérin, compiled 1963–1992 (single-owner provenance). A souvenir of Falicon, the perched village in the hills above Nice — another link to the collector’s Côte d’Azur circle.

Description: A luminous oil-pastel terrace scene at Falicon, above Nice — figures seated at a table beneath a striped awning of orange, red and mauve, a deck chair, flowering plants and a hazy hillside view beyond, all built up in the artist’s pointillist, post-cubist touch of vibrant broken colour. Jean Cluseau-Lanauve was a significant painter, engraver and lithographer of the École de Paris, trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in the atelier of André Devambez; a post-cubist colourist in the tradition around Jacques Villon, he painted animated scenes, festivals, terraces, landscapes and marines, and was appointed peintre officiel de la Marine in 1989. He never travelled without a sketchbook and colours to prepare his canvases, and luminous terrace scenes recur throughout his work. Signed, dated and dedicated by hand to “Yves et Thérèse.”
