A young girl’s face surfaces from a field of ochre, honey and pale grey washes, the features barely fixed — the eyes two soft hollows, the mouth a single dark stroke — while the hair dissolves into granular stains. A stroke of red marks the left temple. The subject belongs to a group of dissolving girls’ heads Fini treated in lithography and aquatint around 1970, and more broadly to the world of masks, sphinxes and spectral presences that runs through her work from her theatre and opera designs to her graphic production. Born in Buenos Aires in 1907 and raised in Trieste, self-taught as a painter, she arrived in Paris in 1931 and was soon close to Ernst, Éluard, Bataille and Brauner; she exhibited with the Surrealists while always refusing to join the group. Sphinxes, cats, androgynes and enigmatic women people her painting, and she worked extensively for the stage while illustrating Sade, Poe, Marcel Aymé and L’Histoire d’O.
