Condition: Very fine. Rich, clean impression with a crisp plate mark and full margins with deckle edges. A few light handling creases in the margins, unmarked. Unframed.

A band of Camargue horses — one dark, the others the pale grey of the breed — stands among the tamarisks at the edge of a shallow étang, a foal pressed against its dam at right, while egrets wade in the water in the foreground and a low mas closes the horizon under a sky drawn in long parallel hatchings. The composition is built almost entirely from line: the reeds bent by the mistral in a single sweep at right, the bare branches drawn with a whipping nervous stroke, the pale coats reserved in the white of the paper and modelled with only a few contours. Born at Versailles in 1907, Brayer trained at the Montparnasse academies and the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Prix de Rome in 1930; his years at the Villa Médicis bound him for life to the Mediterranean. After the war he discovered Provence — the Alpilles and above all the wild expanses of the Camargue — which transformed his palette and furnished the subjects of his maturity. He settled at Les Baux-de-Provence, where the Musée Yves Brayer was opened in 1991, and pursued engraving alongside painting throughout his career.
