Condition: Good, with minor defects confined to the margins: scattered foxing and handling creases to the upper right margin; image area unaffected. Unframed.

Two heavy wooden fishing boats — the nearer lettered THÉIA, the next AUGUSTIN — lie beached on a pale slipway in the foreground, their gear heaped across the thwarts, while a line of masted boats recedes along the quay to the right. Across the flat water stand the tiled roofs and sheds of a working waterfront, dominated by the black scaffolding of a shipyard, and behind them a long wooded hill closes the horizon under a grey-green sky laid in with broad diagonal strokes. The site is almost certainly Saint-Tropez, where Segonzac first stayed in 1908 and which became the subject of much of his life’s work. Born at Boussy-Saint-Antoine in 1884, he trained at the Académie de la Palette and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1909, taking part in the Section d’Or in 1912 and the New York Armory Show in 1913; initiated into etching by Jean-Émile Laboureur after the First World War, he became one of the great French printmakers of the century, celebrated for the drypoints of Colette’s La Treille muscate. The present sheet belongs to the suite of colour lithographs after his Provençal watercolours, published in editions of 225 on Arches paper, in which the transparency of the original wash is carried over into the stone.
