A Gothic palace front closes the composition at left, its balcony and shadowed water-gate framing a white statue, while the canal opens across the sheet towards a bank of pink and ochre houses crowned by a dome and two campanili. Barber-pole mooring stakes stand in the green water; a gondolier in a red jacket poles his craft into the foreground, a laden sandolo crosses at right, and a further gondola recedes into the middle distance. The palette — turquoise sky worked in dry, granular strokes, rose and terracotta façades, mossy green water — is characteristic of Oudot’s mature work in colour lithography. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, he became Léon Bakst’s assistant on the Ballets Russes in 1915 and remained with him until 1923; it was Bakst who introduced him to Cézanne. A leading figure of the group later known as the Réalité poétique alongside Brianchon, Legueult and Terechkovitch, Oudot worked as painter, muralist, stage designer and book illustrator from his studio at 110 rue Caulaincourt, and lithography occupied him steadily from the 1950s onwards.
