Bon à tirer (printer’s proof for approval) for the portfolio Meanders

Colour screenprint on Arches wove paper

Monogrammed “T” in pencil lower right by the artist, as his approval of the proof. No other mark: as a working proof it bears neither the publisher’s blindstamp nor the stamp and signature found on the verso of the published edition.

Dimensions:
+ Sheet : 50.3 × 65.8 cm (19 3/4 × 25 7/8 in.)

Condition: Good condition. Some spotting and handling creases. The verso is not blank: it carries a printed image of a work by another, unidentified artist, the printer having reused the sheet for this proof.

Printed and published by Edition Lanz, Basel.

An intermediate colour state: crimson with partial black overprinting.

This is one of the bons à tirer that Edition Lanz submitted to Tobey during the making of Meanders. Tobey checked each proof and approved it by adding his monogram “T” in pencil. These approved proofs are therefore the only impressions from Meanders signed by Tobey himself: he died on 24 April 1976, before the edition was printed, and the published edition of 77 numbered impressions was issued posthumously with the artist’s seal in place of his signature and the signature of Mark Ritter on the verso. The proofs were pulled on Arches sheets already printed on the back with the work of another artist, the printer evidently not wanting to waste valuable paper on trial impressions, and they carry no blindstamp or verso stamp. Only a handful of these monogrammed proofs exist, which makes them very rare.
