Seven numbered racehorses and their jockeys parade left to right before the start, a starter in grey standing on a white stepladder at left and two men in checked and striped suits watching from the foreground; ochre and green trees, two flags and the Eiffel Tower close the horizon. The stippled fan-shaped grass and flat outlined figures are characteristic of Haddelsey’s naïve manner, and the tower identifies the course as Longchamp.
