Description: A sumptuous bouquet — sunflowers, daisies, a red rose, blue delphinium spikes and mixed blossoms — in a rounded white vase on a dark table, set against a glowing golden-ochre ground, built up in watercolour and gouache with white heightening. Robert Vernet-Bonfort was a French painter and lithographer, born in Marseille and trained at its École des Beaux-Arts; profoundly deaf, he made painting his language, and is known above all for still lifes with “explosions of colour,” prized for their finesse of execution and composition. Regarded as an internationally recognised Provençal master, he won the Elizabeth T. Greenshields Foundation Grand Prize (Montréal, 1965). An early (1967) and especially accomplished example of his signature floral subject. Signed, dated and dedicated by hand.
