Plate 222 of Les Maîtres de l’Affiche, the legendary subscription series published monthly in Paris from December 1895 to November 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, reproducing in collectable format the finest posters of the Belle Époque. First prize of the poster competition organised by the daily L’Éclair in 1897, this design by the nineteen-year-old Henri Thomas — a Parisienne in a flowered hat and ruff reading the paper against a burst of sunlight — was printed by Chaix in the Ateliers Chéret and earned its young author a place in the series.
