Condition: good condition, unframed
Provenance: Livre d’Or de Yves Guérin, compiled 1963–1992 (single-owner provenance). A telling network link: Lelong was given a retrospective at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice in 1974 — the establishment the collector directed.
Description: A fresh, luminous beach scene — a young woman in red bikini bottoms, flippers in hand, stepping across a pebbly foreshore toward a turquoise sea, a blue boat drawn up at left and gulls wheeling through a soft grey-blue sky. It unites Lelong’s signature motifs — the bather, the beach, the flight of gulls (“L’envol”), the boat. Pierre Lelong was a French figurative painter, engraver and lithographer, a member of the Salon Comparaisons committee who centred his art on the beauty of women and on lively seascapes; an outspoken defender of figuration (“Pourquoi je suis figuratif”, 1971), he won the Grand Prix des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps in 1973, and his work is held at the Musée des beaux-arts de Châlons-en-Champagne. Signed, dated and dedicated by hand.
